Letter to My Daughter: What I Want You to Know as You Grow

Letter to My Daughter: What I Want You to Know as You Grow

Dear Abby,

As you stand on the brink of your teenage years, I can’t help but marvel at the incredible young woman you’re becoming. These years ahead will be full of discovery, challenges, and growth. I want to pause for a moment and share some thoughts with you—pieces of wisdom I’ve learned, often the hard way, that I hope will help guide you through this journey.

First,  know your worth. The world may try to define you by your grades, your appearance, or your accomplishments, but don’t ever let it. Your worth is intrinsic—it’s in your kind heart, your quick wit, and the way you light up a room with your laugh. Hold tight to that knowledge, because it will steady you when life feels uncertain.

Second,  it’s okay to fail. I know that sounds scary, but failure is just a stepping stone to success. It means you’re trying, learning, and growing. Don’t let the fear of falling stop you from chasing your dreams. You’re stronger than you realize, and every stumble is just part of your story.

Third,  be kind to yourself. You’ll make mistakes. You’ll have days when the mirror doesn’t reflect who you want to be. But you are still you—amazing, capable, and enough. Talk to yourself like you would a best friend, with love and encouragement.

Finally,  find your people. Life is better when shared with others who uplift and inspire you. Choose friends who see your potential and cheer you on—and be that kind of friend in return.

When I was your age, I wish I had known these things. Growing up was tough, and I often felt unsure of myself. I wish Girls on the Run had been around then—a place where I could have learned to set boundaries, build confidence, and see my own value. I see the way GOTR helps girls today, and it fills me with hope for you and your generation.

Abby, you are the reason I pour my heart into this program. Every time I see a girl cross the finish line of a 5K, I think of you and how much I want you—and all girls—to know just how limitless your potential is.

As you navigate the years ahead, know that I’m here—cheering for you, just like I do for every girl in GOTR. You are my greatest inspiration, and I am endlessly proud to be your mom.

With all my love,
Mom
