As the Executive Director of Girls on the Run Piedmont, I find myself brimming with gratitude as we wrap up another amazing 5K season. Watching our girls cross that finish line—smiling, cheering, and radiating confidence—is nothing short of magic. It’s a testament to the incredible strength within each of them, and it reminds me why we do what we do.
This season, we saw over 300 girls lace up their sneakers, supported by their families, volunteer coaches, and our incredible community. Each girl carried her own story to the starting line—some tackling their very first 5K, others running to prove to themselves just how far they’ve come emotionally and physically. I can still hear the cheers at the finish line and see the pride in their faces. Those moments stay with you.
One story that stands out is from a girl named Lily. When she first joined Girls on the Run, she was nervous about running and hesitant to participate in group activities. But week by week, her confidence grew. At the 5K, she not only crossed the finish line but also stopped mid-course to encourage another girl who was struggling. That’s the power of this program—teaching resilience, kindness, and teamwork that extends far beyond the track.
As we move into the holiday season, it’s time to embrace another important lesson we teach in Girls on the Run: the value of rest and reflection. After a whirlwind season of practices, lessons, and celebrations, taking a moment to pause is essential—not just for the girls but for all of us. Rest isn’t about doing nothing; it’s about recharging so we can show up as our best selves for the people and causes we care about.

Create a family gratitude jar. Every day, write down one thing you’re thankful for and read them together on New Year’s Eve. Teaching gratitude helps girls focus on the positives and build resilience in challenging times.

As we step into the holidays, I want to thank every girl, coach, volunteer, family member, and community partner who made this season possible. Together, we are creating a world where every girl knows her limitless potential. That’s a gift we can carry forward into the new year and beyond.
