Reflecting on 2024: Better Together

As we close out 2024, I find myself reflecting on a year that has been nothing short of extraordinary for Girls on the Run Piedmont. This year’s theme, “Better Together,” resonated in every event, achievement, and story. It reminded us that the magic of our program happens when we join hands as a community to inspire joy, health, and confidence in every girl.

This year, we introduced our first annual Sneaker Soiree, a gala that celebrated our program, raised desperately needed funds, and highlighted the incredible contributions of our "Wonder Woman," Michelle Coloney. Michelle's dedication as a coach, fundraiser, and community advocate has uplifted countless girls. Her story reminds us that we truly are better together when each of us brings our unique strengths to the table.

Another highlight was awarding our first GOTR Alumni Scholarship to Lexi St. John. Lexi, a former Girls on the Run participant turned junior coach, now serves as a running buddy for her younger sister. This full-circle moment symbolizes the enduring impact of our program. When asked what Girls on the Run means, Lexi said, "This program taught me to be proud of who I am and gave me the courage to pass that message on to others." Lexi’s story showcases the ripple effect of being part of a community where support and encouragement flow freely, reminding girls that they matter.

While these milestone moments are exciting, the heart of our program lies in the individual stories of growth and transformation. One Heart & Sole participant shared how our lessons helped her combat negative self-talk: "I used to tell myself I wasn't good enough," she said. "Now, I remind myself that I can do hard things, and I always try my best." Stories like hers remind us that when we lift each other up, we are truly better together.

Our Fall 5K at the FredNats Baseball Stadium was a day for the books, with over 700 runners (and just as many spectators) crossing the finish line. The crowd's energy, smiles, and cheers were electrifying, making it our biggest event yet. Watching the girls accomplish their goals alongside family, friends, and community members reminded us all that every step matters. Our 5K continues to be the "area's most inspiring 5K event."

This year, we were also thrilled to be named Culpeper’s Nonprofit of the Year for 2024! This recognition reflects the dedication of our coaches, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners who make our work possible. It’s a powerful reminder of the difference we can make when we come together. A nonprofit is truly the culmination of its staff, board, volunteers, and participants, and each link works tirelessly to ensure that we are always better together.

Every milestone we’ve achieved this year has been made possible by you—our amazing community. From the dedicated coaches and volunteers to the generous sponsors and families cheering from the sidelines, you are the heart of Girls on the Run Piedmont. It is your belief in our mission that allows us to serve every girl, regardless of her circumstances.

As we grow, ensuring financial stability is key to never turning a girl away due to her family’s financial circumstances. That’s why we’re thrilled to invite you to join our Champions for Change monthly giving program. Your recurring gift provides a steady, reliable income stream that allows us to plan for the future with confidence, ensuring every girl has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of Girls on the Run.

As a Champion for Change, you’ll not only make a lasting impact, but you’ll also receive exclusive benefits, including free entries to our 5K events and tickets to our annual Sneaker Soiree. It’s one more way we can celebrate being better together while ensuring that no girl is left behind.

Looking Ahead to 2025

And here’s the best news: as we look ahead to 2025, we’re doubling the inspiration by hosting two unforgettable 5Ks! With the addition of the Wicked Bottom Fun Run Festival (May 3) in Culpeper, our reach continues to grow, giving more girls and families the chance to experience the magic of crossing the finish line.

We are also excited about the return of our unique Sneaker Soiree on March 29 at Stevenson Ridge. (Get your tickets now!) These events will be a celebration of our collective efforts and a reminder that we are better together when our entire community rallies behind the dreams of our girls and empowers our future female leaders.

Thank You for Being Part of Our Story

Looking back on 2024, it is clear that our greatest successes came when we worked together as a community. Whether it was through coaching, cheering, donating, or simply believing in the potential of every girl, your support made all the difference.

As we move into 2025, let’s carry this spirit of collaboration forward. Let’s continue to remind our girls—and ourselves—that we are better together. Because together, there is no limit to what we can achieve.  TOGETHER, we WILL create a world where EVERY girl KNOWS and ACTIVATES her LIMITLESS POTENTIAL!

Here’s to more milestones, more smiles, and two unforgettable 5Ks in 2025!

With gratitude and optimism,
Kathy Butler
